Skincare for sensitive skin: a gentle routine that still gets results

Sensitive skin is defined by an overactive response to products, weather and stress. It flushes, itches, tightens or stings without warning. The routine that works is one that respects the barrier, introduces actives at half speed, and edits out anything unnecessary. Here is how to build it.

What sensitivity really is

True sensitive skin is often barrier-compromised. The stratum corneum is thin or damaged, allowing irritants in and moisture out. Rosacea, eczema and general reactivity all sit on this spectrum. The fix is barrier repair, not stronger products.

Ingredients to embrace

Ceramides and cholesterol for barrier repair.

Niacinamide at 4 percent for redness reduction.

Panthenol and centella asiatica for calming.

Multi-weight hyaluronic acid for gentle hydration.

Squalane as a lightweight emollient.

Ingredients to avoid

Fragrance, including essential oils.

Alcohol denat as a primary ingredient.

High concentrations of AHAs and BHAs.

Physical scrubs and cleansing brushes.

Sulphates in cleansers.

The morning routine

Rinse with lukewarm water. Skip morning cleansing entirely if the skin feels tight.

Hyaluronic acid on damp skin.

A gentle Vitamin C at 10 percent, applied every other morning to start.

Ceramide-rich moisturiser.

Mineral SPF 30 or higher. Chemical sunscreens can sting sensitive skin.

The evening routine

Gentle cream cleanser.

Hyaluronic acid on damp skin.

Retinol once a week to start, buffered with moisturiser both before and after. Many sensitive-skin users never go beyond twice a week and still see excellent results.

Rich moisturiser to seal.

Building tolerance slowly

Introduce one new product at a time and give it two weeks before adding another. This makes it easy to identify a trigger if reactivity returns.

Patch-test on the jawline for three consecutive nights before applying to the whole face.

When to pause everything

If skin is actively red, itchy or stinging, pause all actives. Return to the simplest possible routine of cleanser, hyaluronic acid, ceramide moisturiser, SPF. Give the barrier two weeks to recover before reintroducing anything.
